Acer has released Windows drivers for the A150 today and they can be downloaded here. They are not really useful as no AA1s with built-in 3G are available yet, but they do reveal which 3G module will be used. There are actually two drivers included in the package. The first is for the internal Option GTM380 PCI Express module while the other one is for an external 3G USB modem by Qualcomm.

The Network Manager in Linux was already updated with an 3G Option a few days ago, which may actually be referring to the name of the 3G module itself.

Thanks to macles for the heads up.

T-Mobile Germany have announced a deal which will see them selling a heavily-subsidized Acer Aspire One netbook along with 3G WWAN data access.  The setup, which will be internal an HSDPA modem, is similar to that recently announced by Vodafone in the UK, who have an exclusive European deal with Dell to offer 3G versions of the Inspiron Mini 9 netbook..

T-Mobile Germany will be selling the Aspire One for just one Euro ($1.43), as long as users agree to a two-year data contract at €35 per month ($50).  That works out to €841 over the two years, or $1200, which is more than the Vodafone/Dell deal; however there’s no word on what the data limit is.  Vodafone’s offer has a rather meagre 1GB cap.

Also unclear is which version of the Aspire One is on offer, the hard-drive or SSD based netbook.  Presumably Vodafone will be bundling the cheapest, which suggests the Linux OS and 8GB of SSD storage.

Thanks to slashgear for the info.

TAIPEI, Taiwan — Acer Inc., the world’s third-largest computer supplier, seeks to become the bigges
t seller of notebook computers by 2011 and targets revenue of US$30 billion that year.

Acer wants to sell mobile computers through telecommunications companies, company Vice President Gianpiero Morbello said in an interview after the press conference. It signed a deal with Deutsche Telekom AG’s T-Mobile wireless unit, which will start reselling Acer’s Aspire One notebook for one euro in November to users signing up for a 24 month mobile data transmission contract, the German company said yesterday.

“In Italy, we are already discussing with other telcos,” he said. “It’s a new channel, a new way.”

Acer plans to sell about 6 million Aspire One units this year, and “a good percentage” will be through telecommunications companies, Morbello said.

“Lately the market has been witnessing rapid growth in popularity of various MID devices and Netbook computers. For the most part these devices work on the Linux operating system, which offers several specialized variations of itself that are geared for such devices.”

This project consists of creating several totally open (meaning accessible to both computer user enthusiasts as well as computer manufacturers) and operable builds based on Windows© Embedded CE 6.0 that will work on several popular platforms. We are starting with the following devices: Aspire One, Lenovo IdeaPad 9.

All system components, device drivers, operating system shell, and additional applications (excluding those contained in the Windows© Embedded CE Platform Builder) are accessible in the form of source code with licenses permitting their free usage, modification and distribution of derivative versions.

(there was talk of this on our message forums a while ago, as Microsoft already has a offical Windows CE version that you can download now)

Getting Windows XP installed, however, does not. I do not have an external CD/DVD reader (I’m the world’s worst geek, I collect old, outdated computer peripherals, not new ones that would actually be useful), so I needed to install Windows XP using an USB stick. You’d think that in 2008 this would be trivial, but apparently, it’s not, for some mysterious reason. I like to think it’s that same reason that supposedly explains why Vista’s Mobile Device Center doesn’t sync Windows Mobile devices with Vista’s Contacts, Mail, and Calendar applications.

Creating a bootable Windows XP USB stick is tricky, but not impossible. The surge in popularity of netbooks has created a lot of attention on this subject, meaning there are a lot of guides out there. This one worked for me, but your mileage may vary. Once you’ve booted off the USB stick, be wary when you come to the step where you create and format the system partition, because you have to make sure the system partition is the c: one, or else the system will not boot. This may mean that you need to reboot into the text installation after creating the system partition just to be sure it’s mounted as the c: drive. And yes, it’s not you, it’s still 2008. Be sure to format the partition with fat32, as that greatly improves the speed of the system.

Hands on Acer’s Aspire One is ready to go out of the box, but if you’ve opted for the Linux version and you’re new to the OS, you may be wondering how to started. Here are ten things to try.

Before we start, a warning. Later tips involve working with Linux configuration files, which do not take kindly to errors. Check your typing very carefully, particularly spaces and capital letters, and only proceed if you’re comfortable. Back up your data, and ensure you have a recovery disk on stand-by. We’ve done our best to check the text below, but we won’t be held responsible if your AA1 crashes and data is lost. Nothing here will damage your machine or void your warranty – at worst, you’ll have to reinstall the OS using the Recovery Disc that comes with the AA1.
