Acer plans to launch 10-inch Aspire One netbooks in February or March next year, according to Scott Lin, Acer Taiwan president.

As for its 8.9-inch netbooks currently available, the 3.5G module-based Aspire One netbooks being bundled with Taiwan Mobile (TWM) services is expected to reach a shipment volume of 9,000 units in the Taiwan market in the fourth quarter this year, Lin said. Acer currently sells 10,000-20,000 Aspire Ones and 7,000-8,000 consumer notebooks monthly in Taiwan, he added.

“The Aspire One is extremely compact without hitting the impractical level of miniaturization seen in the (one-pound) OQO2 PC . At 2.2 pounds with an 8.9-inch 1024 x 600 LCD screen, it’s comparable to some portable DVD players, yet it’s a full-fledged Windows XP machine (a Linpus Linux version also available) with a 120GB hard drive, 1 GB of RAM and an Intel 1.6 GHz Atom processor. There is no built-in optical drive (DVD or CD), but there are three USB ports and two memory card slots—one for SD only and the other supporting SD, MMC and Memory Stick. You also get an integrated Web cam and mic as well as Wi-Fi. This package would be a lot more complete with built-in Bluetooth, but the $399 price tag (more like $350 at many retailers) makes up for that lack.”

The Black Edition has a larger SSD memory – 16GB without any moveable parts. The six-cell battery further increases this Aspire One’s performance – 5,200 mAh instead of the previous 2,600 mAh. This should bring the running time up to seven hours for this netbook which weighs less than a kilo.
The Acer Aspire One Black Edition will retail for £340.

Acer is planning to launch a low-power and low-cost 1-liter nettop at the beginning of 2009, according to sources at OEM providers.

Since Acer expects Aspire one netbook shipments to surpass its goal of 12-13 million units in 2009, to prevent the nettop from impacting the company’s Atom processor supply, Acer is considering using processors from VIA Technologies or AMD, but will still leave the Intel Atom as a possible option.

Acer also has three manufacturers in mind to make the nettop: Quanta Computer, Wistron and Micro-Star International (MSI). The company is expected to reach a decision in December.

Acer’s nettop will be targeting both enterprise and consumer markets and be able to connect to a TV and LCD monitor.

Acer shipped about 2.4 million units of their Aspire One netbook in the third quarter, with a total of 5-6 million Acer netbooks sold in 2008. If their forecast for next year is correct, the global market for netbooks would expand to up to 35 million units, with the Taiwanese manufacturer hoping to grab anything from 40-50% of the pie.

It remains to be seen how this will contribute to the bottom line and image of Acer on a global scale, but for the time being the company seems to be financially healthy with $12.8 billion in revenues so far this year which would represent a 31% increase from 2007.
