USA computer supplier JR, have put the new 10″ Acer Aspire One on their website to pre-order for $349.99.
The model listed is the Acer Aspire One AOD150, and comes in white, black red and blue. Atom N270 1.6Ghz processor, 1GB of ram, 160GB hard drive and a 6-cell battery.
On Wednesday, an Acer spokesperson told ZDNet UK that the 10-inch Aspire One “will be available with XP or Linux, and HDD or SSD”, and confirmed that the Linux distribution would be Linpus. However, buyers will not have these options in the initial release of the netbook, which will launch in mid-February and cost £299.
The SSD will have a capacity of 16GB. There is, as yet, no launch date or pricing for the Linux flavour of the machine.
Unlike the 8.9-inch Aspire One, the 10-inch version will not have a second SD card slot. In the earlier version, the second SD slot was there to hold a flash memory card that would be more-or-less permanently housed in the netbook to augment the 8GB or 16GB SSD. According to Acer’s spokesperson, the new version lacks that second slot “due to the increase in standard storage sizes”.

Finally, also in March, there’ll be the Acer Aspire One D150-2BG: that will have Intel’s 1.66GHz Atom N280 processor together with the 6-cell battery and integrated 3G quadband UMTS/HSDPA mobile broadband. Pricing for the D150-2BG is expected to be around €449 ($575).

Acer, the third largest vendor in the global PC market (source: Gartner data, 1H 2008), today presented an all-new 10” Aspire One netbook, complete with a 10-inch screen, Windows XP and integrated Bluetooth, and designed for a fast, simple and utterly cool online life.
Only one year after first appearing on the market, netbooks have totally revolutionized the PC market, helping to form an entirely new market segment that users themselves created through a real need to be online all the time and to socialize around the clock.
Acer, thanks to its unique ability to read market trends and anticipate user needs, rapidly introduced the Aspire One, the world’s most popular netbook.
“Despite the recent problems of the financial markets and general economic uncertainty, the netbook and notebook markets will continue to grow in 2009” said Gianfranco Lanci, President & CEO, Acer Inc. “With companies focused on containing the crisis, consumers and products designed for them become more important as users simply cannot do without their personal communication instruments.”

In the press release for the ten incher, Acer observes that netbooks have really taken off. It then goes on to boast: “Acer, thanks to its unique ability to read market trends and anticipate user needs, rapidly introduced the Aspire One, the world’s most popular netbook.”
There was more insight from Acer CEO and President Gianfranco Lanci: “Despite the recent problems of the financial markets and general economic uncertainty, the netbook and notebook markets will continue to grow in 2009,” he said.
The 10″ Aspire one will be available in the UK by the middle of next month, Acer claims, and will cost around £300.

Acer is reportedly considering phasing out its consumer 8.9-inch Aspire one in the second quarter of 2009 to make way for the upcoming 10.1-inch model, according to notebook industry sources.
Any such move would impact Quanta Computer the most, the sources commented.
Acer plans to outsource its consumer 10.1-inch Aspire one to Compal Electronics, while two enterprise models, one 10.1-inch and the other 8.9-inch, will be outsourced to Quanta, noted the sources.
However, even if Quanta loses 8.9-inch orders, the company would still receive extra 10.1-inch orders as compensation, the sources pointed out.
Quanta declined the opportunity to comment on this report.

Grab yourself a 4GB (or bigger) USB 2.0 thumbdrive, reformat it as FAT32, and simply copy the contents of the Windows 7 Beta ISO image to the memory stick using xcopy e:\ f:\ /e /f (where e: was the DVD drive and f: was the removable drive location).
Not only was it easy to boot and install from the thumbdrive, it was also blindingly fast: quicker than the corresponding DVD install on my desktop machine.

“If you are in the market for a netbook, then you may want to hang fire for a few weeks, as Acer’s latest 10-inch version of its popular Aspire One is on the way
TechRadar spotted the machine on the Acer booth at BETT 2009. We were unable to take photos, unfortunately (at the request of an Acer rep) though suffice to say that it is pretty much styled like the first series of the Aspire One, with a slightly larger screen. Funny that!
Acer’s Aspire One 10.1 netbook is “on the boat” and will be arriving in the UK in “four to six weeks” according to the sales rep TechRadar spoke to
The new Aspire One will be here late February, boat permitting. Prices and further details to follow very soon”
