“We’re not entirely sure how serious to take this, but apparently Acer’s hugely popular 8.9-inch Aspire One netbook will trash the hard drive if you play music through it too loudly according to some users on HardwareCult. One of the tracks it has taken a particular dislike to is U2’s Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me, which several users have been able to replicate the problem with.

Ultimately, the drive will undergo “complete catastrophic failure, talking with it all the user’s data“, according to Tigre Marino who made the original claim. The result is “read errors, ATAPI errors on the system log, and even logging Raw Read Errors on the hard drive’s SMART health monitoring system.”

You’ll see, after some seconds, the hard drive LED will get stuck and the machine could freeze or get a BSOD. Lower the volume or plug in some headphones and the problem magically disappears,” Tigre said.

It’s unknown what causes the problem. Is excessive vibration to blame? Does the video emit a frequency that causes part of the HDD to resonate? Is it simply electrical or magnetic interference? Others have suggested that when the speakers are on full, the HDD received insufficient power. All of the users that reported this were running XP rather than Linux and had hard-disk drives rather than solid-state drives. For those that dare to try it themselves, the U2 video can be found here.”

I don’t think it’s the hard drive. I made that same mistake on mine as well. I cloned the hard drive and put that in and it seemed to work great after having to flash the BIOS since the screen stopped working. I have noticed several problems with this little unit while owning this netbook. After switching out the hard drive like I said it worked great. Then I started to listen to music on youtube. Then after a few songs it started to sputter and go crazy again. I was thinking to myself how can two HDD’s go that quickly. Especially when the original unit was a fairly decent brand. I did notice after I switched HDD’s it runs a little cooler but it’s not a huge difference. I then flashed my BIOS again following word for word the instructions for flashing BIOS from Acer. Guess what it stopped acting crazy. But I think that it has something to do with having the volume all the way up and and the constant rythm of music being played. Then for some reason that makes the computer go coo koo. I happen to have ran across some other websites that seem to say that Acer has a problem with their BIOS. I’m not sure if it’s all their computers or just these Aspire One’s. Another problem area I have personally have had was the key board. But that was partially from allowing my teenage Daughter use it with her gummy hands while eating. But after explaining to her to keep her hands clean and replacing the keyboard it has been fine since then.
