Expert Reviews check out the Acer Aspire V5-571 – a really good looking netbook that runs Windows 8. However, they were a little disappointed with the performance:

The V5 makes a good first impression. It looks every inch the high-end laptop and is significantly smarter than the V3. Our review sample had a smooth, matt silver finish on the screen bezel, keyboard and wrist rest, and is a slim 23mm thick. Its 15.6in screen has the usual 1,366×768 resolution, but colours are both bright and vivid, and our test photos showed excellent contrast and plenty of detail.

Unfortunately, though, that’s more or less where the V5’s appeal ends, as our hopes were soon dashed when we started to use the laptop for more heavy-duty tasks. 4GB of RAM is plenty for Windows 8, but with a last-generation Intel Core i3-2367M processor running at 1.4GHz, the V5 performed dismally in our multimedia benchmarks, scoring only a measly 23 overall. Even at this low price, this is below what we’d expect; you’ll be ok with office tasks and web browsing, but we wouldn’t recommend any image editing and video editing is right out.

PC Pro have a hands on review of the Acer Aspire S7-391 – one of the first Windows 8 models in the Aspire series:

There’s a USB 3 port on either side of the base, along with a microSD slot and a headphone socket. A micro-HDMI port on the back is the only video output, but that’s to be expected given the thin chassis.

But the main thing that strikes you is just how much is crammed into such an incredibly small and light chassis. It’s less than half an inch thick and weighs 1.3kg, yet this tiny beast packs a Core i7 with Intel’s HD 4000 graphics, 4GB of RAM and a 256GB SSD. Whatever we tried on the S7, it responded instantly – including prodding the screen, which very quickly became second-nature with the screen so close to hand.

Check out the review here:

You can download it from Microsoft (either as ISO or auto-download package, which includes info how to boot via USB if required)

This consumer edition expires January 2013, so it will give a good amount to test it out, and time for developers to write new apps for it, before the final release early next year.

Back in December Acer launched the Aspire One AOD270-1834 it comes with high level Specs for a netbook and it offered the latest Cedar Trail version of the Intel 1.6 GHz Atom N2600 processor! Nevertheless, the delivery of the Cedar Trail chips was delayed, which stopped the Aspire One AOD270-1834 in its tracks.

However at the recent CES 2012 expo in Las Vegas, there was an abundance of Cedar Trail powered laptops and netbooks on show, which forced Acer once to make a move, this time the Aspire One AOD270-1834 is ready for pre-order on Amazon. However, there is no date indicated as to when the buyer can expect to take delivery of the machine.

The AOD270-1834 comes with the normal 10.1 inch WSVGA LED back lit low-res display with a 1024 x 600 of pixel resolutions and it comes with a built in 0.3 mega pixel web camera.

The most interesting part of this netbook will be the new Cedar Trail version of the Intel Atom Dual Core N2600 Processor with 1.6 GHz, it will be supporting the Mobile Intel NM10 Express Chipset and graphics are from the Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 3600. Internal memory is just 1024 MB of DDR3 RAM but this in line with other netbooks, as is the 320 GB SATA Hard disk Drive (HDD) at 5400 RPM for storage.

Networking relies on the 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi feature and it would seem that no Bluetooth is available on this netbook. Other features include three standard USB 2.0 Ports, an HDMI port and there is even a useful multi into one digital media card reader.

The netbook measures 10.17 inches (L), 7.28 inches (W), 1.01 inches (H) and weighs in at 2.87 pounds (1.3 Kg) with the 6 cell Li-ion Battery (4400 mAh) that Acer claim to be good for up to eight hours Battery Life while running the Microsoft Windows 7 Starter operating system.

Pre-order availabe at www.amazon.com

“We admit, we were pretty stoked when we first saw the Acer Aspire One AOD250 running Android in dual-boot mode. What could possibly be bad about it? Fast start-up, Google apps… other good things that aren’t coming to mind at the moment… what could go wrong? Turns out, just about everything. See, the Aspire One AOD250 has an unfortunate lack of Google blessing, so that means no Gmail, which is really Android’s killer app, and no Marketplace either — so no opportunity to track down a different killer app. You can use your Google account for hooking up with Gcal, Gtalk and Google Contacts, but your Gmail account gets set up as a webmail shortcut to the included Firefox app — which does an alright, slightly hacked-on job of augmenting the standard Android browser, including support for Flash. Unfortunately, with connection woes over WiFi and Ethernet (as seen on the video), there wasn’t much redeemable even there, and perhaps the best news about the device is that it can be fully booted to XP at any time by clicking on the corner of Android’s home screen. We still think there’s promise for Android on a netbook, but it’s going to need some serious TLC (also, Gmail) before it’s ready for prime time. Check out our video impressions after the break.”

I still wanna try it out though myself anyone got a link to download it ?

The Acer Aspire One Happy has been announced, an Android netbook available in a range of colours. Offering Android as an alternative to the traditional Windows or Linux operating systems is going to be an interesting theme, with the mobile operating system a major hit in the phone world.

More importantly, the specs are an LED backlit 10.1 inch screen, WiFi and the potential for embedded 3G, a weight of 1.25KG and 250GB of storage.

Add in an Intel Atom N450 or dual-core Intel Atom N550 at its heart, the Aspire One Happy and 2GB memory and you have a decent level netbook with an Android twist.

And some colours. Let’s not forget the playful colours.

The Acer Aspire One Happy is available now with a UK price of £249.99.
