How do I put an icon for vlc media on my basic desktop?

Postby pattyadams » Fri Jul 18, 2008 8:46 am

Hi
I am new to linux but have switched on advanced mode and have downloaded and installed vlc media player. I can find it in my advanced desktop but wondered if there was any way of putting an icon onto my basic desktop? If anyone can help please keep it simple!

I have not yet installed VLC yet what package version did you use?

As for adding it to the desktop, location its installed location, probably be in /usr/share/applications/
Then open /home/user/.config/xfce4/desktop/group-app.xml and add the appropriate line, probably something similar to below

<app sequence="10">/usr/share/applications/vlc.desktop</app>

This should then appear in the appropriate section, then you can drag and drop it into the appropriate order.
BTW you will have to reboot before it appears.

Hope it helps.

Thanks will give it a go.

I used the fedora 8 package. I think I googled vlc for Fedora 8 download and went to this site:

www.videolan.org/vlc/download-fedora.html

and followed the instructions under Fedora 8

I've found the desktop xml file I need to edit and I've found the usr/share/applications file for vlc but can't seem to find the appropriate app sequence.... if anybody has any ideas or knows the sequence it would be much appreciated. :)

Should be straight forward.
If no one has done it, I will install it when I get home and let you know, unless I can get on a network here later.

Thanks. I'm having trouble opening the /usr/share/applications folder as it keeps telling me that nautilus file manager is not running!

OK I have added this to my fun section.

<app sequence="6">/usr/share/applications/livna-vlc.desktop</app>

Then drag and drop where appropriate.

Go to the file manager, then where it says "My Disk:///" just paste in /home/user/.config/xfce4/desktop/group-app.xml

I don't know how you got your version of VLC, but I got mine from the linva repository. so xml needed to say "linva-vlc.desktop". Also the command somehow got garbled when I downloaded it, so I had to edit the desktop config file in root to remove the " &U" that got added to the end of the VLC command, or else clicking the icon would launch vlc but give me an error. Hope some of this helps.
