Project - SSD Mods

Postby Ariel » Sat Jul 12, 2008 10:51 am

ok folks looks like a few of us have managed to take apart their one and upgraded the ram. There seems to be quite a bit of space left so maybe someone could figure out if it would be possible to install one of those new samsungssds .. or some other kind of HDD??

Comments?

Some members of this forum seem to suggested that the SSD in the One is removable, but to my knowledge, nobody has done it (confirmed it for certain) yet. Also, if it is removable, how is the new SSD going to attach/secure based on the differences between the old SSD and the new? I'm also curious about the HDD versions of the One... I wonder if they also use the ZIF connector? SATA? I haven't taken my One apart, or even received it yet for that matter, so keep this in mind when you read my analysis.... I'll try to respond to your question based on what I know.

The technical issues with this mod...
The current SSD is connected using a ZIF connector, it's logical that your new hardware would need to use the ZIF connector. Also, the version w/ the 2 1/2" HDD is supposed to be of slightly different dimension --bigger in some way-- which would imply that a 2 1/2" HDD or SSD won't fit in the SSD version Aspire One chasis... so you'd be limited to the 1.8" HDD or SSD...

Together, these restrictions leave you with the option of any 1.8" SSD using ZIF a connector or 1.8" HDD using ZIF a connector.

My concern (other than the high price/benefit ratio) with buying an 1.8" SSD that uses ZIF is that the ZIF connector limits its interchangeability... also, I couldn't imagine there is a huge market to resell this kind of product.
My concern with buying a 1.8" HDD is that they're 4200RPM (from what I've seen online) which means you'd be sacrificing all the benefits that come with the SSD only to switch to a low-performing HDD... again what's the price/benefit?

I was considering that I might want to do this modification because some people told me they installed Windows on their Linux version and the SSD was SUPER slow... I was worried that the SSD was just slow in general and that I was going to want to upgrade the SSD... but then someone explained that I'd be fine as long as I'm running Linux (which is what I want the system for)

So this is my recommendation:

If you haven't yet purchased your One yet, you should choose the One that fits you best...
If you want to run Linux only, purchase the 512MB 8GB SSD Linux version.
If you want to run Windows, or multiple OS, on your One and you haven't purchased it yet-- get the HDD version...

If you've already purchased your One, do whatever makes sense to you.... but for me, the ZIF connector ruins everything and upgrading from the SSD is probably the last thing I'll do...

Good Luck!
